Freelancing will become the default way of working.
Why? Because one of the advantages of technology is that it grants knowledge independence. And knowledge independence leads to generalists. The generalist is a self sufficient individual who reaches a level of knowledge that allows him to solve multiple problems across multiple domains. We are currently experiencing an abundance of specialized individuals, however as more knowledge is facilitated through technology, the less the need for highly specific skillsets.
How do i know this? It's quite simple. We all have the same basic needs and we all have the same roots. Self and collective sufficiency come first, progress comes second (although one may argue that self and collective sufficiency is progress in itself). It is absolutely no use to me that we can go to Mars as long as local and global sufficiency is not the default. Think of a beehive. All bees work together as a single organism sharing the same goal, self-sufficiency. Humans on the other hand, have an intrinsic drive to change, create and explore. As long as we do not share the same values and we do not compensate for this internal drive with precaution, we are dividing ourselves. This does not mean that ultra-specialized skillset will disappear, but skills we consider today as special, will become generic.
Freelancing is a step in the right direction, as self-sufficiency requires independence. Freelancing requires a new state of mind and also introduces new friction points. Instead of having a pizza slice on your plate, you now have an entire pizza. You need to think of how you can rationalize the pizza. A freelancer not only deals with multiple projects but is also involved in more phases of a project: planning, execution, delegation, prospecting, communication and more. This might put a strain on yourself especially in the freelancing transition phase and you need a way to reduce this friction. One way to deal with it, is to grab a pen and paper and write down whatever is relevant to you in order to manage the projects. This method never fails. You might however not be able to use this method either because the transition has a steeper curve or because the nature of work relies on dynamic data or [insert_your_reason]
How can Specula help?
If you find yourself in any of the cases above, you might want to take a look at how Specula can assist you. By configuring a dashboard, you are able to reduce the load on yourself and to always be prepared. At a glance, you can understand the status of your project. Remote workers can benefit from this as well since it is very easy to forget what to do next, when a project is due and so on, if you are not in the middle of the action. Regardless of whether you are a freelancer or remote worker or both, you still collaborate with other people. Your clients might expect you to communicate the project status. If you already configured a dashboard for yourself, in just a few steps you can share that dashboard with your client. However, these are not the only use cases. It's up to you to identify where Specula can help you most. Maybe you want to present key points to a larger audience, maybe you want to maintain a single source of truth for your team, maybe...
